OMAR NORBERTO GONZÁLEZ
June 6, 1947 - March 4, 2025
Omar Norberto González was born in Regla, a municipality of Havana, Cuba on June 6, 1947.
In 1950, Omar, Omar's parents, Benito González and Zoila María Concepción González, and Omar's older brother, Guillermo (William) moved from Regla to New York, New York (Manhattan) to join Benito's brothers and their families. Omar attended P.S. 165 in Manhattan.
A native Spanish speaker, Omar learned English rapidly and often acted as an interpreter for his parents.
In 1957, Omar and his family moved from Manhattan to The Bronx, New York where Omar enrolled in P.S. 122 and later at P.S. 143 where he began junior high school.
At age 12, Omar put his entrepreneurial spirit into action by starting a lucrative shoeshine stand business inside a bar until it was disrupted by a police officer. Undeterred, Omar moved on to delivering newspapers.
In 1961, Omar's family moved to Los Angeles to join Benito's brothers Guillermo and Roberto.
Omar was very proud of his parents who both worked very hard to support the family. After arriving in Los Angeles, Omar's father, Benito, found employment as an expert and much sought after tabaquero, a man who practices the art of making hand-rolled cigars. Omar's mother, Zoila found work as a gifted seamstress.
In September of 1961, Omar enrolled in Belvedere Junior High School in East Los Angeles where he made lifelong friends. Omar then attended Garfield High School where he met his future bride Estella Villaseñor. After Omar's 1965 graduation, he enrolled in East Los Angeles College and later California State College, Los Angeles where he pledged to Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. He graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and accepted a position as an aeronautical engineer at North American Rockwell where he worked on the development of the B-1 Bomber.
Omar was a member of MENSA International, the world's largest and oldest high IQ society.
Omar became an expert and a very successful blackjack player often traveling with friends to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Although Omar was a talented aeronautical engineer, he tired of being an employee and started his own business, California Custom Case Company, and later, to this day, Omega Case Company located in Burbank, California.
Omar worked long hours developing his business to make it a success achieving his goal of becoming financially independent.
Omar was an extremely generous man with his family, friends, and employees.
One of Omar's passions was the care of animals. He supported many animal charities and frequently took in strays.
Omar put up a courageous and noble battle against prostate cancer finally succumbing to the disease on March 4, 2025, at The Mission Care Center in Rosemead, California. Omar's family and friends thank the staff for the loving and loyal care he received there.
On March 29, 2025, after a chapel service in the Church of the Recessional at Forest Lawn, Glendale, Omar's cremated remains were inurned in The Garden of the Mystery of Life Columbarium also at Forest Lawn Glendale.
Omar was predeceased by his loving parents Benito and Zoila María Concepción González; uncles Domingo, Guillermo, Roberto, and Ángel González; and longtime companion, Melodía "Melody" Santiago Vargas.
Omar is survived by his wife, Estella Villaseñor González, brother William González, daughter Amber González Velásquez, son-in-law Randy Velásquez, grandchildren Isabella and Daniel Velásquez, as well as numerous cousins and friends.
