Omer Dale Tongret
October 29, 1937 - February 14, 2026

Omer Dale Tongret was called to heaven on Valentine's Day, 2026, at his home in Peachtree City, Georgia. Born on October 29, 1937, in Ohio, Omer's life was a testament to resilience, faith, and service.

Preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Earl Tongret, Omer faced the profound loss of becoming an orphan at the tender age of three after his mother's tragic passing in a car accident. He was also predeceased by his six siblings and his first wife of over 50 years, Carol Benefield Tongret of Columbus, Georgia. Despite early hardships, Omer's enduring faith and dedication to others shaped a remarkable life filled with purpose and love.

Omer proudly served his country as an Army Master Sergeant during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. His distinguished military career included time at the Pentagon and numerous accolades for his patriotic service. In 2022, he received one of his most cherished honors—a Quilt of Valor—recognizing his contributions to the nation.

After retiring from military service, Omer continued to serve others through his work with the State of Georgia at the Department of Family and Children Services. His commitment to helping those in need extended into every aspect of his life.

A man deeply rooted in his faith, Omer was a Deacon at the Baptist Church in Columbus, where he taught Sunday School, led Boy Scout troops, and raised his son, John Tongret. His legacy lives on through John and his three grandchildren: Jay Tongret of Atlanta, Jennifer Tongret of Maine, and Gerald Tongret of Texas—all of whom he was immensely proud.

In 2011, Omer found a second chance at love when he married Evelyn O'Dell Collins. Together they built a new chapter in Peachtree City, joining Flat Creek Baptist Church. There, Omer continued to nurture his faith and serve others with unwavering kindness and purpose. Evelyn's family embraced him wholeheartedly, adding six stepchildren—Jack Collins (KY), Jeff Collins (KY), Karen Muller (GA), Joe Collins (KY), Chip Collins (KY), and Kathleen Collins (KY)—as well as 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren to his circle of love.

Omer's passions extended beyond faith and family. He had a special talent for gardening; his vibrant flowers mirrored the light and warmth he brought into the world. His green thumb even earned him recognition in *The Ledger-Enquirer* newspaper of Columbus. Whether tending to his beloved garden or walking with his cherished dog Papi, Omer found joy in life's simple yet profound moments.

Omer's life was a symphony of devotion—to God, family, country, and community. As Matthew 25:21-23 so beautifully states: "Well done good and faithful servant." His memory will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

May Omer's legacy of love and service bring comfort to all who mourn his passing while celebrating the extraordinary life he lived. A Visitation will be held on March 6, 2026, at 01:00 PM at Flat creek Baptist church 161 flat Creek trail. Visitation at 1pm. Funeral service at 2pm
