Patricia Anne McDermott, a resident of San Diego, CA, died on January 21, 2026 at the age of 73 after a mercifully brief battle with Alzheimer's disease. She passed quickly and peacefully with the comfort of hospice. She will be remembered for her quick wit, love of Miller Light, and dedication to solving every crossword puzzle published.
Patricia (Pat) was born on Dec 18, 1952 in Akron, Ohio. After graduating from high school in Centerville, OH, she decided college wasn't her thing and enlisted in the Navy. She achieved the Naval rank of Chief Petty Officer Hull Technician and was a welder by trade. As a testament to her skill, she outperformed all the men in her class. Her Naval career spanned 20 years, taking her to places near & far. Those of us who were the recipients of some of her gifts from these faraway places remember them fondly - like the knock-off Rolex watch that broke within days of use. She ultimately landed in San Diego, where she resided for 30+ years. Pat loved San Diego so much so that it was difficult to cajole her into venturing out. Her sisters talked her into two girls' trips, both of which were memorable. The Galveston Beach trip, where she considered calling NASA because the moon was missing (we were near Houston after all), was particularly entertaining. Pat was known for her great sense of humor and was always loads of fun to be around, as her many friends would attest to.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, John (Jack) and Charlotte McDermott and her long-term partner Mary. She is survived by her eldest sister Kathleen Reddaway and husband Donald of Sand Springs, OK; younger sister Dr. Barbara McDermott of New Orleans, LA; her younger brother John McDermott of San Diego, CA; and her niece Marleen Reddaway of Tulsa, OK.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
