Patricia “Pat” Barnd West
July 27, 1958 – December 12, 2025
Patricia “Pat” Barnd West, a longtime resident of Kodiak, Alaska, peacefully passed away on December 12, 2025. She was born on July 27, 1958, the third of six children, to Lu Verne and Joseph Barnd and grew up in Wells, Minnesota. Pat was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Stout as a Registered Dietitian.
Pat worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, and St Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge, Minnesota, before moving to Alaska.
Pat made Kodiak her home, building many meaningful connections. A strong woman with a generous spirit. Pat loved the outdoors, gardening, cooking, and bringing people together. She could create a four-course meal on short notice, always welcoming friends and family into her home. Her generosity and hospitality left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She enjoyed sharing the beauty of AK with numerous visitors. Whether it was fishing, hunting, camping, hiking or sitting by a campfire; Pat was proud of her State.
As a dietitian, Pat traveled to all parts of Alaska, working with Indigenous communities, juvenile diabetes programs, and the WIC program. She also worked at the Kodiak Hospital. Her work took her to many locations, often flying in mail delivery planes, riding snowmobiles; even sleeping on a school gym floor. This demonstrated her dedication, courage, and commitment to improving the health of others.
Pat was married to Peter Till in Minnesota and Ed West in Alaska. Both marriages ended in divorce.
Family was central to Pat’s life. She shared close bonds with her siblings, nieces and nephews and extended Alaskan family. Pat took great pride in those relationships. Her legacy of love and resiliency will continue through those who knew and loved her.
Patricia is survived by her siblings: Daniel Barnd (Rebecca) of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania; Mary Sonnek (Dennis) of Mahtomedi, Minnesota; Andrew Barnd of Wells, Minnesota; Susan Barnd (Janice) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Thomas Barnd (Lori) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews and eleven great-nieces and great-nephews.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held in Kodiak. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Kodiak Island Food Bank in Pat’s memory.
