Paul Dennis Smith, age 79, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on December 11, 2025 surrounded by his family. Paul was born on August 12, 1946, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force. On July 1, 1970, he married the love of his life, Patricia Kay Pitt, and they had two children, Angela and Alexander, whom they cherish deeply.
He wore many hats throughout his life, most notably in sales, truck driving, and as a healthcare tech. Paul was a people person and anything he could do that involved having a good conversation with someone, he was ready. In retirement, Paul worked as a cashier at Hy-Vee until 2020 - which was ultimately his favorite position.
Outside of work, Paul found joy in traveling - especially near the mountains, where he felt most at peace. He loved camping, fishing, and learning through documentaries - especially anything involving the USAF. His most cherished pastime, however, was seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. They were the light of his life.
Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia; children: Angela (Garth) Peter, and Alexander (Lisa) Smith; brothers James (Ellen) Smith, Robert Smith, Peter (Jane) Smith, and Kevin Smith; seven grandchildren: Marissa (Carson) Barron, Maggie (Nate) Tauke, Sydney Smith, Emma Smith, Tate Peter, Ryland Smith, Remy Elle Smith, and three great-grandchildren: Cash Barron, Carson Mae Barron, and Baylor Tauke, with two more on the way.
In addition to his parents, Harold and Mildred Smith, Paul was preceded in death by his siblings Thomas, David, Richard, and Jo Anne. Paul will be remembered for his kindness, his quiet strength, and his unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
