Paul Jones Wright, Jr.

Paul Jones Wright, Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, and dedicated educator and coach, passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 80.

Paul was raised in Lake City, FL, graduating from Columbia High School in 1963. He then attended the University of Florida, earning a degree in Education/ Physical Education —setting the stage for a career that would span over 42 years. Mid-career he went back to college, attending nights and weekends, to earn a master's degree in Administration. Paul was always studying, practicing, learning something new or improving a skill.

He inspired generations of students in Lake Butler, Clewiston and New Smyrna Beach with his guidance, discipline, and encouragement along with his unmistakable sense of humor. Paul had a way of lightening up any situation-whether with a quick-witted remark, a well-timed joke, or the playful spirit he brought to both the classroom and the field. He believed in showing up for others, pushing them to be their best, and reminding them—often with a smile—not to take life too seriously.

His family was the center of his world, and he took great joy in their lives and accomplishments. He was a loving husband to his wife, Rebecca Wright, and a proud father to Leslie Betts (Bob), Wes Wright (Lisa), Cole Wright (Rachel) and Allie Wright (Skyler). He cherished his grandchildren Jenna, Rachel, Desi and Waylon, and his great-grandson, Riley. He shared a lifetime of memories with his sister, Paula (Bob) Himschoot. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul, Sr. and Lois Wright, and his two brothers, Elmer Spires and George Spires.

Paul's legacy lives on in the many students he coached, the lessons he taught, the laughs he shared, and the family he loved so much. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and probably quoted often.

A Celebration of Paul's life will be held May 9, 2026 at 11:30 am. Live Oak Cultural Center, 1050 Live Oak St, New Smyrna Beach, FL.
