Pedro's early years were spent in his beloved Huitzila, where he completed primary school before moving to Ocotlán, Jalisco. In 1976 he entered the seminary, beginning his studies in Lotatiche, later continuing at the Seminario Menor in Guadalajara, the seminary in Tapalpa, and finally the Seminario Mayor, where he completed three years of theology. His theological formation continued at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, where he earned a master's degree in theology.

He was ordained a Catholic priest and served for several years in the state of Washington, first as a vicar and later as a pastor. After stepping away from active ministry for personal reasons, Pedro returned to Columbus, Ohio, where he lived for many years before relocating to San Antonio, Texas, in 2012.

A man of deep faith, insatiable curiosity, and unwavering devotion to his roots, Pedro dedicated much of his life to studying history, genealogy, and the Catholic tradition he cherished. His passion for understanding where people come from—both spiritually and ancestrally—guided his most meaningful projects.

Pedro authored "Huitzila, Zacatecas, Su Historia," a work that sought to preserve the memory of his hometown, rescue foundational documents, and honor the people and events that shaped that small but significant corner of Mexico. His book stands as a lasting contribution to the cultural heritage of his hometown of Huitzila and a testament to his love for the place that formed him. He also traced the Cortés family genealogy back to its origins in Spain, a project that connected generations and strengthened family identity.

Pedro was preceded in death by his parents, Isabel Castro Flores and Sebastián Cortés Correa; his sister Irene Cortés Castro; and his brother-in-law Pedro Alvarado Muro.

He is survived by his siblings and brother-in-law:
