Penny Hartford Heaney passed away on December 23, 2025. She was born in Joliet, Illinois on June 18, 1944, to Vincent and Virginia Hartford. Penny told many stories about being surrounded by family, especially her four siblings -Sally, Greg, Geoff, and Gary. Her family moved to New York, New Jersey, and finally landed in Houston where Sally teased her about having a southern accent by day two. She graduated from Marian Christian High School and went on to use her gift for hospitality in the work force. Her welcoming and warm personality uplifted all who came through the door or called.
As a bank teller, she met her spouse, Brother. He won her heart by putting flowers (some bought and some picked from the esplanade) in the daily deposit bags. Penny and Brother were married on May 6, 1967, and celebrated 58 anniversaries together. Through those years, they shared many memories with their children, Kelly and Marty.
Penny will be remembered for the kindness and generosity she showed toward others. She volunteered countless hours at Holy Ghost Church and School where her children attended. She continued her gift of service at Faith Methodist Church as a Sunday service greeter, a member of Threads of Hope, and a volunteer for many of their special events. She always had a card, flowers, or little “goodie” for those in her life. She built relationships with anyone whose path she crossed – whether it be the butcher at the grocery store, the Randall’s pharmacist, or the workers she gave donuts to every Friday at the recycle center. Penny brought joy to so many and did not allow hers to be taken. When negativity crossed her path, Penny’s mantra was “You will not steal my joy!”.
Penny’s greatest source of joy was her family. She was the heart of the home for all who entered. From putting away clean laundry and stocking your favorite snacks to having sleepovers and planning Christmas Eve dinner, Penny did it all. With each addition to the family, through marriage and kids, her love only grew. She often said, “There is nothing greater than my love for my grandchildren.” She will be thoroughly missed, but her joy, compassion and purposeful actions leave behind a legacy of love and service.
Penny is preceded in death by her beloved son, Marty. She is survived by her husband, Brother; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Jay Kallina; daughter-in-law, Christy; grandchildren, Mason, Riley, Kendall, and Hailey; great-granddaughter, Nova; her siblings and her many nieces and nephews.
Penny’s Celebration of Life will be held at Faith Methodist Church in Richmond, on Thursday, January 29th at 4:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Ministry or Threads of Hope at Faith Methodist Church: www.FaithMC.org
