Send Flowers

With profound sadness, the family of Peter Dwight Furness, 83, shares the news of his unexpected passing on November 26, 2025, at his home in Delray Beach, FL. He was born in Winsted, CT, July 2, 1942, son of Richard and Virginia Becker Furness, and raised in Colebrook in a house fondly remembered as The Creamery. He resided in Hartford and Newington, prior to moving to Florida in 2020. A graduate of Northwestern Regional No.7 High School, he attended Bryant University, served his country with the US Army in Germany, and later obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Finance from the University of Hartford. He spent his career employed by the Veterans Administration in the Hartford and Newington offices. Peter was the husband of the late Susan Violet Furness. Together they shared a happy, active life, filled with family, travel, camping, and volunteering. They were members of The Happy Wanderers, the CT Chapter of FCRV. With this dedicated group, they devoted a portion of camping trips to the physical improvement of the area. Peter is survived by his son, Scott, and his wife, Susana, and his grandson, Liam, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Sue's children, Kristin Medvecky and her husband, Trevor, of Portland, and their sons, Jaxon and Erik; and Justin Otis of Manchester. Also surviving are his brother, Brian Furness; niece Gioia Furness Petro and husband, Alan; nephew, Andrew, and wife, Dana, and their children, all of New Orleans, LA; niece Anna Boksenbaum and her husband, Tim Mahoney and their daughter of Queens, NY. He also leaves many cousins and friends and his former wife, the mother of his son, Joan Furness of Hartford. In addition to his parents and wife, Sue, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elena Riverstone; sister-in-law, Charlotte Furness; and nephew, Paul Furness. Peter was a lifelong reader and man of many interests, including the Civil War, historical fiction, maritime tales, maps, trains - he was Vice President of the Railroad Enthusiasts Club in the greater Hartford area, genealogy, and talking. He would initiate conversations with anyone and everyone, friends and strangers. His days in Florida were enlivened by swimming and socializing at the pool and weekly Canasta with friends. Among Peter's most fulfilling times were the 43 years he spent with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 105, Hartford, CT, which met at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church. He served as an Assistant Scout Master, received several awards, made many friends and countless memories. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, 10:00 AM, at Church of Christ, Congregational, 1075 Main St., Newington, CT. Reception to follow in Fellowship Hall. All who knew him are invited to attend and share their memories. In lieu of flowers, please treasure your family and friends, and most of all, be kind.
