Peter M. Schneiderman, gifted accountant, athlete, and a man forever curious about the world and its ways, passed away in Palm Beach, FL, on June 26, 2021.
During the 60 years of his accounting business in NYC, his clients benefited not only from expert financial advice but also from his personal warmth, trust and quick humor which facilitated scores of enduring friendships.
Peter loved books, including the touch of each page, as if to absorb more of the written word. Sharing that accumulated knowledge made him a natural teacher. He excelled in understanding and explaining, whether instructing on the proper tennis grip for a backhand shot or analyzing the construction of the pyramids in Egypt; he strove for improvement in himself and others, always with keen encouragement. As an outstanding athlete he was a scratch golfer, played competitive tennis, and even took up windsurfing at age 60.
Peter was born and raised in Laurelton, NY. After a semester at MIT in 1943, when Officer Training School was cancelled, Peter volunteered as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and later served with the 193rd Glider Infantry at the Battle of the Bulge. His notable French language skills qualified him as interpreter liaison to local officials in Sens, France. Peter received medals and citations for his distinguished service in WWII, including The Croix de Guerre, French military decoration. After the war, he resumed his education at the University of Wisconsin, then Syracuse University.
Peter settled in Manhattan, working in the accounting firm begun by his father George. Characteristically, Peter brought much energy and multiple clients to the practice, eventually taking over the firm. He said that 'love hit him like a thunderbolt' when he met Arlene, his future wife. They traveled extensively to Spain, France, and Germany with international friends, and eventually settled in Palm Beach, FL.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Arlene, children Jacqueline Silverman and Jennifer Haack, granddaughter Leah Haack, sister Joan Goldberg, nephew David Goldberg and niece Carrie Burke. Peter's was a good life, well lived.
