Peter Whyte, affectionately known as “Sweet Pete”, was born on April 10, 1935, in Dundee, Scotland, to Patrick and Margaret (née McInally) Whyte. The youngest and only son, Peter was happily spoiled by his beloved sisters Mary (Johnny), Margaret (Sammy), and Jean (Alex)—a role he embraced enthusiastically throughout his life.
Peter went on to serve in the British SAS and was stationed in Singapore and Malaysia. During his service, he was the Far Eastern regimental boxing champion (welterweight) for the 11th Hussars—an achievement he wore with quiet pride.
After completing his service, he returned home and met the love of his life, Margaret (née Mackenzie). Peter was smitten at first sight; Margaret, however, needed some convincing about “the Italian with false teeth.” Sixty-six-plus years of marriage later, it’s safe to say he won that argument.
Peter and Margaret moved to Ireland, with their son Stephen, and later settled in Canada, where daughters Robyn and Dana completed their family. Peter built a long and successful career in the textile industry, eventually owning his own business—a source of great pride and a testament to his work ethic, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit.
A natural athlete, Peter was an avid footballer who played semi-professionally in Ireland. He later took up rugby and continued playing well into his 40s, proving that enthusiasm often outweighed good sense. In his later years, Peter embraced golf, playing regularly into his 80s.
Peter loved traveling, learning, and storytelling. He was known for spinning a good yarn (sometimes embroidered with extra detail) and for delivering some truly terrible jokes with impeccable timing and unwavering confidence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, and his favorite in-laws, Samuel and Betsy Mackenzie. Peter is survived by his beloved wife Margaret; his loving children Stephen (Darina), Robyn, and Dana (Scott); his grandchildren Chelsea (Zak), Eleanor, Madison (Josh), Grant (Lauren), Bryce (Lucy), Mac (Rachel), and Luke; and his great-grandchildren Ezra and Wesley. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and good friends that he considered family.
We are eternally grateful for the staff at Legacy at Crystal Falls and Choice Hospice for their loving care over the last year.
In lieu of flowers or donations, please raise a toast to Sweet Pete, play a round of golf in his honor, or take the time to learn something new—preferably while sharing a story that gets better every time it’s told.
