Philip R. Johnson, Sr., 83, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, at his home in Coventry, Connecticut, surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was born in Windsor, Connecticut, on November 7th, 1942, to Mary Babcock and Richard Johnson. Phil or "Butch" was a "Jack of All Trades". He could fix anything and dedicated his career to his work as an independent contractor. He specialized in carpet and tile installation but was a perfectionist and wanted every job that he completed to be done with integrity. His work ethic was unparalleled.
He was a devoted husband to Joy (Davis) Johnson. They were married for 56 years and she lovingly cared for him through his illness. Philip was also a loving father to his sons, Philip R. Johnson Jr., and Christopher L. Johnson (Dana). He loved spending time with his family. He took pride in being a provider for his family throughout his life and was present when his sons needed him. "Papa" was a dedicated grandfather to Alyssa, Morgan, Micah, and Marcus. He had a special relationship with each of them.
Philip is survived by his siblings, Mary Saunders, Bernice Ormond, Roger Johnson, Shirley Johnson, Connie Dollack, and Suzanne Howard. He also leaves behind an extended family and life long friends who he loved dearly and cared for.
Known for his strength and loyalty to those that knew him, Philip enjoyed taking trips on his Harley Davidson, Sunday drives with his wife, Joy, being outdoors, tinkering around in his workshop and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His storytelling, advice, jokes, and laughter will be greatly missed.
Philip was predeceased by siblings, Richard Johnson Jr, Barbara Hicks, Robert Johnson, Carole Hill, and Margo Johnson.
