Phyllis Adorah Smith (Flanagan), 89, of Grapevine, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, at her home in Grapevine, Texas. She was born on August 17, 1936, in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia, and grew up in Springdale, West Virginia. She resided in Charleston, West Virginia, for 27 years before moving to Texas in 1984.
While Phyllis resided in Charleston, she worked for the West Virginia State Teachers' Retirement System, and, in Grapevine, she worked for the Boy Scouts of America. She spoke fondly of both jobs, took pride in her accomplishments at work, and fostered relationships with co-workers who became friends along the way.
Nothing meant more to Phyllis than being with her family. She grew up in a family of nine children, and she cared deeply about her siblings and their families. Taking trips to visit family members across the country was something she did often throughout her life. This summer, she travelled to Keyser, West Virginia, where family members gathered to celebrate her birthday. It meant the world to her that so many people came to see her and share in the occasion.
She was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Haynes, and her step-grandson, Jonathan Chaplin. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Smith, of Grapevine, Texas; her daughter, Drema McCarty (Michael), of Westerville, Ohio; her granddaughter, Sarah McCarty (Haley); and her great-granddaughter, Natalie Houlles, of Westerville, Ohio; her step-daughter, Laura Chaplin (Bill), and her step-grandson, Morgan Chaplin, of Wellington, Colorado; her step-daughter, Anna Sigmon (Christopher), of Elkton, Maryland; her sister, Claudia Wimer, of Keyser, West Virginia; and her brother, William Flanagan, of Springdale, West Virginia.
She was much loved and will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life will be held in West Virginia at a date yet to be determined.
