Phyllis Jane Vandale (née Mayes), 86, of Scott Depot, West Virginia, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on January 1, 2026, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.
Born on February 27, 1939, in South Charleston, West Virginia, Phyllis was the daughter of the late John Philip Mayes I and Flossie Madelen Barker Mayes. She graduated from South Charleston High School and later completed secretarial training at Ben Franklin Career Center.
Phyllis built a dedicated career at the Kroger Warehouse in Kanawha City. Alongside her husband, Robert L. Vandale Jr., she co-owned and operated Bob’s Wheel Estate and Ryder Truck Rental on Route 60 in Saint Albans for many years. She retired in 2005 at the age of 65.
A woman of deep faith, Phyllis was a devoted member of Scary Creek Church of God in Scott Depot. She found joy and purpose through worship and fellowship and was an active member of the church choir.
Phyllis is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Deborah Griffith Barker and companion Mark Bruton, brother John P. Mayes II and wife Joyce; grandsons Brandon Barker and Quincy Bruton; and great-grandsons Ezeekiel Offutt, Kashton Bruton, and Colson Bruton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert L. Vandale Jr.
Phyllis found happiness in simple pleasures—cooking and baking for loved ones, fishing outdoors, and supporting her grandsons’ school sports and wheelchair basketball events with pride and encouragement.
Her life was guided by enduring faith, holding close the words from John 14:2–3
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.".
She was also blessed to have wonderful caring neighbors Terry and Tina Baker along with their children Dylan and Holden that she held dear to her heart
