With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Pomai Kamalani Sage Barton on April 4, 2026, in Jacksonville, FL, at the age of 34. Pomai was raised in Kona, Hawaii and lived a life rich in culture and experience.
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Mele Kalua'u Barton. She is survived by her two sons Devin Nokeakua Apele House, age 11, and Zackery Oren Mālamakila Apele Johnson, age 4. She also leaves behind her father, Douglas (Cecilia), and 6 siblings Kaumana (Vaina), Kapono (Rouie), Lanakila (Laryssa), Kaleo (Laura), Kuulei, Koa (Tehane), dozens of nieces and nephews, extended family, close friends, and chosen family who love her deeply.
A beautiful memorial service was held on Monday April 13 2026, where family and friends gathered to honor and remember her life.
Additional services will be held on Friday April 24 in Syracuse Utah and on Saturday June 13 in Kailua-Kona Hawaii, giving family and friends in different places the opportunity to gather, honor her memory, and celebrate her life.
(More information about services below.)
From a young age, Pomai possessed a tender heart and a fiercely independent spirit. She loved deeply and felt profoundly. Those who knew will remember her radiant humor, artistic soul, and her ability to make the simplest and ordinary moments into meaningful times.
Her life was far too short and not without turmoil. She leaves behind two young sons whose futures will carry pieces of her spirit forward. Her two boys were the center of her heart, and she spoke of them often with immense pride, hope, and love.
In honoring her life, her family hopes her story is received with compassion for those navigating mental health, trauma, and other health ailments, and gently reminds others of the importance of forgiveness and understanding.
Pomai was deeply loved by so many, and her memory will live on in all who knew her. May she finally find the peace that sometimes felt just out of reach in this life.
