Poncil Conaway Jr., 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 27, 2026, in Farmington, Connecticut. Born on November 24, 1944, in Ailey, Georgia, Poncil lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and community.
Poncil built a respected career working for the City of New Britain. His presence there was more than professional—he was cherished by coworkers and community members alike for his warm demeanor and tireless work ethic. Known for his infectious smile that lit up every room and revealed his signature dimples, Poncil had a gift for making others feel seen and valued. He was the kind of man who would lend a hand without hesitation and never expected anything in return.
A man of deep faith, Poncil worshipped as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. His spiritual convictions guided his actions and shaped the compassionate way he treated everyone around him.
Poncil found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved driving around in his Plymouth Road Runner, a pastime that brought him both freedom and peace in earlier years. Westerns were another favorite—he could often be found enjoying classic tales of frontier justice. And when it came to barbecuing, few could match his skill or passion; he took pride in preparing his special ribs and meals that brought people together.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Heristine Gantt-Conaway; brothers Sander D. Conaway, Johnny B. Conaway, Eddie Conaway, and Willis Conaway; and sisters Juanita Brown, Reva Gilchriest, Macey Carter, and Leila Williams.
Poncil leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his legacy: his son Poncil Conaway III; daughter Elease Paladino; son-in-law Brian Paladino; grandchildren Brandon Paladino, Maryssa Paladino, and Mariyah Paladino; brother Willie C. McCloud; a niece that was like his little sister Donia Foster; soul brother Marcus Stevenson; a special cousin Brenda Wiggs; sister-in-laws Annis Mayweather, Genell Powers and Shirley Conaway; an abundance of nieces and nephews and cousins too many to name; and spiritual brother and sister Wayne and Pam G.
Those who knew Poncil will remember him as kindhearted, honest, loyal, hardworking—and above all else—genuinely good-hearted. His impact on others was lasting and profound. May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him. A Memorial Service will be held on February 21, 2026, at 02:30 PM at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses 234 Farmington Ave, Kensington CT
