Prospere (Shel) Shelton Virden, III

1956 - 2025

Prospere Shelton "Shel" Virden III—beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, colleague, and friend—passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 69, after many years of courageously living with complications from Type 1 diabetes.
Born on January 5, 1956, in Glen Cove, NY, Shel's life was defined by devotion—to his family, his work, his community, and his faith.

After graduating from Needham High School, Shel set his sights on Colby College where he excelled at Lacrosse and fraternity life.

After graduating from Colby in 1978, Shel embarked on a groundbreaking career in sales and management in the technology industry. He joined Apple Computer in 1982, rising to Director of Sales Operations during a transformative decade for the company. He later held leadership roles at Now Software, SanDisk Corporation, and International Microsystems before serving nearly a decade as Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at ModusLink Global Solutions. Throughout his career, Shel was admired for his compassionate leadership, sharp business mind, and genuine ability to connect with people.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Shel found his greatest joy in family life. He is survived by his wife, Carol Virden; his son, Ross Virden Ford (Chase Ford); his daughters, Sara, Julie (William Sanchez), Jaime, and Genna; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Tom Virden (Lois Shannon); his sister, Dianna (Didi) Virden; his aunt Ellen Virden White, and five nieces and nephews and many cousins.

Shel loved fishing—especially in the Adirondacks—and savoring all things New England (particularly lobster rolls). In his last five years, he made his home in Pacific Grove, where he truly fell in love with the West Coast. He gave generously of his time and talents to his church and community, serving as a key team member at the church food pantry, as a city board adviser to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, and as a guide at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Friends and family will remember his dignity, humor, loyalty, and unwavering spirit.

A service celebrating Shel's life will be held in early 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Colby College, or Shoreline Church, Monterey.
Shel's legacy of love, faith, and perseverance will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
