Rex Lee Konz, 84, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on January 12, 1942, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late Rodger and Alice (Carter) Konz.

Rex graduated from Selma High School in 1960, where he proudly served as drum major and played basketball. He often recalled his summers working with horses on a family farm. He later earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ball State University Teachers College in 1964.

Rex taught for 35 years, 33 at Anderson Community Schools. Whether directing the band at Madison Heights High School or teaching at East Side Middle School, he made music both fun and meaningful for so many students.

Rex married his first wife, Judith (Thomas) Konz, in 1963. Together they shared 36 years of marriage and were the proud parents of three daughters: Denise (Mark) Harvey of Anderson, IN; Melissa (Paul) Nemeth of Pendleton, IN; and Paige (Paul) Carter of Brownsburg, IN. After Judy's passing, Rex married Nancy (Nau) Konz and they were happily married for 25 years. His stepchildren are Cynthia Ybarra, Ramon Ybarra (Dezarae), Jennifer Strones, and Kathryn (Danny) Major, all of Arizona. He was blessed with 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Rex is also survived by his brother, Tim (Connie) Konz of Huntington, IN, and his sister, Joyce (Terry) Terrell of Muncie, IN, and is remembered by many other relatives and friends.

A true musician at heart, Rex played in a dance band and was skilled at playing a wide variety of wind and horn instruments, with the talent to fix just about any of them. He loved music in every form, whether he was playing it, teaching it, or simply listening.

Rex loved a challenge and wanted to know how everything worked. He could fix almost anything from motors to toys with just Duct tape and super glue. He was also a skilled fishing pole repairman who took pride in untangling even the toughest lines.

He enjoyed time at the lake cottage, RV camping, fishing, boating and never missed his bowling league, even if he had to take his young daughters with him. For many years, He was actively involved with Chesterfield Christian Church, where he served as a deacon, helped with the sound system, and spent many seasons as the star pitcher for the church softball league.

He loved going to Baseball games in Arizona, attended many BBQ's at the park and enjoyed going out to eat. Many remember him as a bit of a collector. Rex never came across an item he couldn't imagine being useful at some point down the road. If you ever needed something, he probably had it or could make it work for you, and it truly made his day to do so.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 17, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Millcreek Civic Center (Memorial Hall), 403 W. Main Street, Chesterfield, IN 46017.
