On January 29, 2026, Rex Preston Sheldon III, of Guilford, Vermont, passed away peacefully at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Born on February 7, 1952 in Rutland, Vermont to the late Rex Sheldon II and Agnes Valenty Sheldon, he was a loving father to Rex Sheldon IV, father-in-law to Emma Sheldon, grandfather to Nevaeh Sheldon and Lakota Sheldon, and big brother to Suzanne, Emily, Paul, and Marjorie Sheldon.
Rex spent his life enjoying the company of those around him through his long-time 37-year occupation as a local bartender at venues such as the Village Barn, Ransom Hastings, Sportsmen’s Lounge, and Mike’s Restaurant. Rex loved his work, loved socializing, and always kept his customers entertained while also throwing out the riffraff on occasion. Rex often claimed to have been involved in over 100 bar fights and never having lost a single one. He was an avid reader, movie enthusiast, passionate Red Sox and Patriots fan, and excelled at trivia. Rex also spent many years involved in softball and pool leagues. He attended pool tournaments across the country, his favorites in Las Vegas. Surprising his family and perhaps even himself, in recent years Rex became a devoted cat dad to Tommy and Miss Kitty.
Rex was a storyteller, telling old stories simply because he enjoyed remembering the experiences he was sharing. But Rex’s greatest accomplishment was his role as a dad to his adored and talented son, Rex IV. They spent many weekends taking long rides and exploring local landmarks across southern Vermont. They loved stopping at places like the Dorset Quarry, where Rex would share memories of his childhood years. They relaxed and slid down the rocks together at Stickney Brook Falls. And in 2003 they traveled to Florida and saw the Delorean and time train from their favorite movie, Back to the Future.
In the days before his passing Rex was surrounded by his loving family and friends, including his friends of over 50 years Gary Richardson, Jerry Remillard, and Andrea Hughes. At his passing Rex was with his sister Emmy and son Rex, who held his hand as he peacefully transitioned to his next great adventure.
Rex is survived by his son Rex Sheldon IV, daughter-in-law Emma Sheldon, grandchildren Nevaeh and Lakota Sheldon, brother Paul Sheldon of Brattleboro, Vermont, sisters Emily Sheldon of Brattleboro, Vermont, Suzanne Sheldon of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Marjorie Sheldon of Madera, California, and several nieces and nephews. Rex was predeceased by his sister Melanie Walker.
Rex’s family is very grateful to his compassionate caregivers, especially those in his final days at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Windham County Humane Society.
A celebration of life will be held later in the year.
