Richard Amos Barton, affectionately known as "Big Roy," passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 83.
Rich was born June 3, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Amos and Sadie Barton. He met the love of his life, Jo Ann "Jody" Dawson, while they were students at Normal Community High School in Illinois. The two shared a remarkable 55 years of marriage until her passing in 2016.
Rich and Jody raised their family in Denver, Colorado, before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1984. A visionary land developer, Rich played a role in building countless communities in Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Mexico, and Japan. Among his most notable projects were Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills, Colorado, and Ancala Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Known for his determination and optimism, Rich was an exceptional problem solver who approached life with the belief that every challenge had a solution. He believed deeply in the power of positive thinking and lived each day to the fullest. He was incredibly generous - always willing to help others and share his time, wisdom, and success. His strength, humor, and larger-than-life personality made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Rich was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Nothing brought him more pride and joy than his family and the many relationships he built. His close cousin and longtime business partner, James Barton, was an especially important part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jody Barton; his son, Michael Barton; his parents, Amos and Sadie Barton; his brother Robert Barton; his sister Sally; and his brother-in-law, Ken.
He is survived by his son Jeff Barton; his daughter Cindy Bitcon; his grandchildren Derek, Sadie, and Mitchell Barton; Zach and Matt Bitcon; and Elle and Ava Barton. He is also survived by his brothers John Barton (Susan) and Paul Barton (Dee); his sister-in-law Vicki Smithson; and 17 nieces and nephews.
Rich was an avid sports fan and commissioner of many sports pools created to keep his family and friends together.
Those who knew him loved him. He will forever be missed. His favorite song was My Way, a fitting tribute to a man who truly lived life his way.
A Celebration of Life will be planned at a future date.
