Richard Edward Griffin of Brewster Massachusetts, a thoughtful friend, devoted partner and gracious Cape Cod innkeeper whose love of music, the arts and hospitality enriched the lives of many, passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 83. Richard was born in Hartford Connecticut to the late John Francis and Helen Elizabeth (Ransom) Griffin. Richard was raised in Hartland and Branford Connecticut and graduated from Branford High School. While there, he was one of five members of the Branford High School Rocket Club, which received national recognition for the successful launch of a sophisticated rocket from Fort Devens Army base in 1959. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Tulane University and a master's degree in library science from Louisiana State University. Richard had a distinguished career in library administration at the Connecticut State Library and American Library Association, and he was Associate Executive Director of the Special Libraries Association in New York. In 1986 he left the corporate world to pursue a new venture in the place he loved most- Cape Cod. Together, with his partner, Charles DiCesare he became the owner and Innkeeper of the Isaiah Clark House Bed and Breakfast in Brewster, welcoming guests for many years until his retirement.
Richard was an intelligent, kind, and gentle man whose quiet warmth touched everyone who knew him. He was a lover of the arts and enjoyed theater, movies, museums, music and opera along with a special appreciation for international travel. An accomplished pianist, he loved to skillfully play Bach concertos on his Baldwin Baby Grand piano. He was also an excellent chef; his pies and baked apples were scrumptious! Richard will be remembered as a devoted loving brother and friend. He is survived by his sisters, Janet Griffin Vingiano and her husband William, Kathleen Wallack and her husband Christopher and his brother Tim Griffin and his wife Randy as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his partner and longtime companion, Charles DiCesare and by his brother John Griffin Jr. A private Celebration of Life will be held by the family at a later date. If you wish to honor Richard, you may listen to some of your favorite music in his memory or donate to the charity of your choice.
