October 12, 1955 - December 4, 2024
Richard Hanfling, 69, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 12, 1955, in Manhattan, NY, to Myra and Alfred Hanfling, Richard grew up in a home full of love in East Meadow, NY. Richard graduated from American University with a degree in Business.
In 1989, Richard joined Swavelle Mill Creek Fabrics (now Swavelle Group) and played a pivotal role in establishing their decorative print and multi-purpose business. He went on to help build Swavelle Group into a major player in the fabrics and furnishings business, ultimately serving as its President from 2005 onward.
Richard had a remarkable ability to connect with others, forming deep and lifelong relationships both professionally and personally. An avid lifelong sports fan, his dedication as a youth sports coach for more than 20 years touched the lives of hundreds of children and their families. Most of all, Richard cherished his family, who were the center of his universe and his greatest source of pride and joy.
Richard is survived by his three children: Lee (Allyson) Hanfling, Jamie (Lauren) Hanfling, and Brett Hanfling; his three grandsons, Cooper, Spencer, and Landon; and his granddaughter, Olivia, who was born after his passing. He is also survived by his siblings, Babs Perschetz and Gary Hanfling, and their families. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Carol, and by his parents.
Family and friends gathered to celebrate Richard's life and honor his memory. Richard's family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends and extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to breast cancer research in Richard and Carol's memory. Richard's legacy of love, kindness and his playful spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
