Richard Alfred Jelen died peacefully on February 8, 2021 at home in Baden-Baden, Germany at the age of 90.
Born in Gleiwitz, Germany on March 14, 1930, Richard earned academic distinction in the Classics, and survived the turmoil of World War II. At the age of 19, he immigrated to the United States, following his sister, Irene, who had immigrated a few years earlier. Richard enlisted in the United States Army as a Medic (TX and NJ) and later joined The Irving Trust Company in New York City. Upon retirement, after decades in international banking, Richard relocated to his beloved Baden-Baden in 1990.
He was a lifelong tennis player and hiker, an avid reader, and a connoisseur of classical music. We remember him with love and gratitude for his integrity, kindness, faith, optimism and elegance.
Richard lost his older brother, Friedrich, in action during WWII. He is survived by his sister, Irene Salerno, her husband, Frank, their children and grandchildren, and many devoted friends in Europe and the United States.
