Richard Leigh Mahr, age 71, of Millington, Tennessee, passed away peacefully from end stage liver failure. Born on December 1, 1954, in Orange, New Jersey, Richard known affectionately as Rick was the son of the late Irwin George Mahr and Luella Mae Mahr.
Rick was a fighter from day one. He survived a traumatic birth that left him with cerebral palsy and faced numerous health challenges throughout his life. Despite these obstacles, Rick never allowed them to define or limit him. As a young man, he pursued his interests with determination, including playing baseball as a pitcher an achievement that reflected his resilience and strength of spirit.
Rick was a devoted sports enthusiast with an encyclopedic knowledge of athletics. He had a deep passion for SEC sports, particularly the University of Alabama and Ole Miss, and was an avid follower of the NFL. He spent countless hours reading sports articles, watching sports channels, and reciting statistics with remarkable accuracy. Another of Rick's great loves was Labrador retrievers, and he strongly supported dog rescue efforts. A proud American, Rick held a deep and unwavering love for his country and its freedoms.
In 1977, Rick graduated from Lambuth University with a dual bachelor's degree in Sports Administration and Business Administration. While at Lambuth, he met the love of his life, Carla Woodard, whom he married in 1976. They shared 49 years of marriage together. Rick enjoyed a successful career with Midas International, beginning as a corporate store manager, later serving as a corporate supervisor and district manager, before retiring in 2004. Rick and Carla moved throughout the country during his career, building a life grounded in faith, family, and perseverance.
Rick was a man of Christian faith who found comfort and joy in Biblical hymns. In the mid nineteen nineties he became an ordained minister through the Baptist denomination. He also loved Italian food and, most of all, cherished time spent with his wife, children, and grandson.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carla Woodard Mahr of Millington, Tennessee; his daughter, Stacy Elaine Mahr, and her husband, Poh Lim, of Atlanta, Georgia; his son, Scott Richard Mahr, of Concord, North Carolina; one grandson, Caleb Poh Lim, of Atlanta, Georgia; and his sisters, Marge LeTourneau of Vernon, Connecticut, and Marilyn "Ginger" Ford of Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irwin George Mahr and Luella Mae Mahr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to K9s for Warriors (K9sforwarriors.org) or Seeing Eye (seeingeye.org) honoring Rick's lifelong love for animals. The family will honor his life privately.
