Richard J. (Bus) McFarland, 92 1/2 years young, passed away January 12, 2026 in Naples Florida.
Richard was born June 23, 1933 in Chagrin Falls OH, son of the late John Richard (Dick) McFarland and Christine McFarland He married Naomi (Penny) Ness in 1954. They were married 61 years before Penny predeceased him in 2015.
Richard graduated from Chagrin Falls High School in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed at several bases across the U.S. and in Morocco, North Africa before his discharge in 1955.
Bus retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1988 after 33 years of service. He started his career as a clerk, working his way up to the position of Postmaster at the Chagrin Falls Ohio Post Office. He was loved and respected by his employees, as well as his friends and neighbors in his hometown.
Richard's leadership skills carried over to the community organizations he served in both Ohio and Florida. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F), an organization that advocates Friendship, Love, and Truth for the betterment of humankind. He was a member of Prokop Velky Lodge 708, Beebe Rebekah Lodge 45, Chagrin Falls Encampment 317 and Canton Cleveland 33. He was the Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of Ohio (87-88) and was a Major General when he served as Department Commander of Ohio (89-91). Bus received the Grand Decoration of Chivalry in 1982, the Highest Military Honor in the Patriarch Militant Branch. He was also on the Board of Directors for the I.O.O.F. assisted living facility in Springfield Ohio for many years.
After moving to Florida in 2002. Bus kept busy serving as Parliamentarian to the Tall Oaks of Naples Home Owners Association. He worked at the Mayflower U.C.C. Resale Store and served as Council President for the Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ. He also volunteered with the Democratic party in Naples.
Family and friends were always a priority for Bus, In his younger days, he enjoyed swimming, fishing and camping. He loved playing cards, Dominoes and Bingo. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan, watching his Indians/Guardians, Cavaliers and Browns until his last days.
He is survived by his children, Cynthia McFarland of Naples FL, Christine Iannetta (George) of Bainbridge Twp. OH, Rich McFarland (Nancy) of Wixom MI. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Heather Patton (Steve), Christopher Aaron Martin, Brian McFarland (Rose), and Stephanie Krafft. He has 9 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Carole Stutzman (1993), his brother, Jack McFarland (2006), and his great granddaughter, Morgan Patton (2025).
Memorial services for Richard will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, January 31, 2026 at Mayflower U.C.C., 2900 County Barn Rd, Naples FL and the family will greet friends immediately afterward at a reception hosted by the church's ladies auxiliary.
Bus and Penny will both be interned at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Bus's hometown of Chagrin Falls Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ. A Memorial Service will be held on January 31, 2026, from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM at Mayflower United Church of Christ 2900 County Barn Rd
