Richard John McKenna

1952 - 2026

Richard John McKenna, born January 4, 1952, in New York, New York, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Jeanne Asaro and William McKenna.

Richard lived a vibrant and generous life, marked by his love of people, good food, and beautiful surroundings. For a significant part of his life, he lived abroad in Búzios, Brazil, where he enjoyed beautiful ocean views, the warm sea breeze, and working hard to maintain a beautiful home. He loved welcoming others into that space, hosting gatherings that ranged from large, lively parties to intimate dinners with friends and family. During his time there, he also organized special charity events to raise money for various organizations, including those supporting children with down syndrome. Richard was unapologetically always himself and spent his life trying to experience as much as he could.

A man who could fix almost anything, Richard spent many years working alongside his brothers. He was known for striking up conversations with anyone he met, never missing the opportunity to make a new friend or share a story. If you knew Richard, you could likely tell a hilarious story about him—or remember one of his famous dishes. He loved cooking for others, whether it was a plate of spaghetti and meatballs, fresh bruschetta, or even a simple meal of hot dogs and French fries that he somehow managed to elevate.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jeanne Asaro and William McKenna.

Richard is survived by his daughter Melissa Lesperance, her husband Timothy Lesperance, and their children Alexander and Elena Lesperance; and by his daughter Stephanie McKenna and her daughter Mila McKenna. He was a loving and proud grandfather and was grateful to meet his newest granddaughter before his passing.

Richard is also survived by his brothers and sisters, as well as countless nieces, nephews, and godchildren who will remember his warmth, generosity, infectious smile, and endless jokes.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date in late spring of 2026.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
