Richard Harold Morstad, age 83, passed away on March 19, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Richard was born on July 12, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Harold and Dolores Morstad. He was a proud graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder and carried a lifelong passion and deep appreciation for history and politics.
Richard built a distinguished career in healthcare and public service. He served as a Regional Director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield and later worked as an Auditor for the Veteran’s Administration. In his retirement, he found great joy in serving as a docent at the LBJ Library in Austin, Texas, where he shared his love of history with others.
He was a devoted father and grandfather. Richard is survived by his children: Karen Morstad Goldberg (Mark), Mike Morstad (Robin Porter), Timothy Morstad (Donna), and Christy Hundley. He was a proud grandfather to Juliette Guice, Pipes Guice, Williams Guice, Preston Hundley, Jonas Morstad, Anders Morstad, Luke Hundley, and Bowie Hundley. He is also survived by his sister, Maxine Moore.
Richard had a deep love for sports, especially the Denver Broncos, and enjoyed watching Westerns. He had a special fondness for horses and spent countless hours reading and re-reading his collection of Western novels. His curiosity and enthusiasm for history remained a defining part of his life.
A lifelong Lutheran, Richard was a faithful member of several congregations over the years, including Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wheat Ridge, Colorado; Hope Lutheran Church in Buffalo Grove, Illinois; and Triumphant Love Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 7 at 3:00 p.m. at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, 7777 W 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, Colorado 80033.
Richard will be remembered for his sense of humor, his warmth, and his enduring love for his family and the stories of the past.
