Richard Pio

1945 - 2026

We come together to honor the life and legacy of Richard L. Pio, a remarkable man who navigated a lifetime of service, adventure, and love with courage and dedication. Born on July 11, 1945, in the sunny city of San Diego, California, Richard began a journey that would span eight decades until his peaceful passing on February 13, 2026, in Anchorage, Alaska.

The pride of the Pio family, Richard was a beloved sibling to his brothers, David, Don, and Ron, sharing in the irreplaceable bond that only siblings understand. Although David, Don, and his dear parents, Harold and Eleanor Pio, have predeceased him, his brother Ron carries forward the light of their family. Richard's life was further enriched by the unyielding love of his late wife, Terry, and his bond with his children, Autumn, Crystal, and Fredrick, who preceded him in death. His legacy blossoms through his grandchildren, Breanna, Chantal, Brandon, Tanner, and Emmitt, and his great-grandchildren, Sawer, Sonny, and one joyously expected addition to the family. Richard’s memory also lives on in the hearts of numerous nieces, nephews, and their children.

Richard's formative years saw him graduate from Ramona High School in the spring of 1963, a time of hope and new beginnings. He then took the selfless step to enlist in the Navy, where his bravery and valor were recognized. Richard courageously served with the Brown Water Mobile Riverine Force during the Vietnam War, weathering the harrowing combat that included a life-altering encounter with a sniper. This event led to his honorable discharge, decorated with a Purple Heart and additional commendations that reflected his unwavering fortitude.

The call of duty beckoned Richard once more in 1974, when he enlisted in the Armed Forces and became an esteemed member of the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. Known as the "Big Red One," this division became another chapter in Richard's story of dedication. His career took him across the world, from the forests of Vietnam to the rugged landscapes of Afghanistan, from the cultural richness of Korea and Germany to the domestic postings of San Diego, Fort Carson in Colorado, and Fairbanks in Alaska.

Richard's commitment to his country was matched by his love for adventure. Not one to shy away from the spotlight, he once found himself in a striking news report, captured descending from a helicopter—a visual testament to his dynamic character. Upon retiring at the lofty rank of E8 in the 1990s, he quipped with a smile that even death would find him too stubborn, and that he would likely outlast us all.

In his respite from service, Richard cultivated passions that connected him to the earth and its history. He treasured the quiet solitude of ice fishing, embraced the warmth of campfires while fishing in the summer, and pursued his penchant for coin and record collecting. Each hobby was an extension of a man who was as courageous as he was interesting, someone who carried adventures in his heart and shared them with those he cherished.

Today, we reflect on the life of a man who was adventurous and spirited, who lived his years to the fullest, who invested deeply in family, friendship, and country. Richard L. Pio leaves behind a mosaic of memories, etched into the lives of all who knew him. It is with great respect and admiration that we say farewell to this extraordinary soul, whose story will be told with honor and whose spirit will be missed beyond measure.
