Richard Alan Potts

Richard Alan Potts, 78, of Hermosa Beach, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026. He was born February 3, 1948, in Glendale to Nancy Martin Miller and Richard Malcolm Potts, both of whom preceded him in death.

Richard grew up in Southern California and graduated from Palos Verdes High School before continuing his education at Loyola Marymount University. He built a successful career as a structural engineer and was widely respected by colleagues for his thoughtful leadership, steady presence, and practical wisdom. Among coworkers he earned the nickname "Dr. Potts," a nod to both his knowledge and his ability to offer calm, clear guidance—often delivered through what friends fondly referred to as his "Pottsisms."

Richard was a devoted member of The Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates, where he served as a church member, choir participant, and board member over the years. He found joy in many things: a round of golf, a nice glass of bourbon, whiskey, or scotch, traveling—especially on Viking Cruises—listening to classic rock (with a particular appreciation for Eric Clapton), watching Formula 1 racing, and enthusiastically rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Rams.

Richard is survived by his son, Michael Richard Potts and wife Jaz Prasertlum, and granddaughter Joey Cole Potts; his daughter Samantha Liann Pruitt and husband Jordan Pruitt, and grandchildren Lillian Rae, Ava Louise, and Logan Bear Pruitt; his significant other Barbara Kokkinakis and her family, including daughter Julia Kokkinakis Gross, husband Eric Gross, and their children Nico and Paige Gross; and his brother Tom Potts and wife Yolanda. He is also survived by stepbrothers Philip Miller and wife Angie, and Peter Miller and wife Linda.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Nicole Marie Potts, his wife Betty Potts, and his stepbrother Steven Miller.

A memorial service celebrating Richard's life will be held at The Neighborhood Church (415 Paseo Del Mar) in Palos Verdes Estates on Saturday, May 16 at 3:00 PM. Light refreshments will follow the service. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and share in remembering a life well lived.
