The Rev. Richard Arthur Pugliese, 82, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in Topsham, Maine. A devoted priest in the Episcopal Church and a beloved husband and father, Richard’s life was marked by faith, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the world around him.

Born on May 6, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, Richard’s early years were shaped by the vibrant culture of the West Coast. He pursued higher education at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1965. Feeling called to ministry, he continued his studies at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Upon graduation from Seminary in 1970, he began a lifelong vocation within the Episcopal Church that would span decades and touch countless lives.

Richard’s first position in ministry was at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Concord, New Hampshire where he was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1972. His journey then led him to St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Northfield, Vermont in 1973 and later to St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Olney, Illinois in 1977. In recognition of his leadership and spiritual guidance, he was nominated to serve as Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in Springfield, Illinois in 1983—a testament to his unwavering commitment to his faith and community.

Throughout his career, Richard remained deeply connected to both his parishioners and the broader mission of the church. His work reflected a thoughtful balance of pastoral care and administrative leadership, always grounded in compassion and humility. Later in life, Richard became a Benedictine Oblate faithfully participating in the liturgical and sacramental life of the church. Through this experience, he became closely associated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Abbey in Westfield, Vermont.

Outside of his ministry, Richard found joy and renewal through nature and travel. He had a passion for boating, skiing, hiking, and exploring lighthouses—often combining these interests with family adventures across the country. Summers spent on the lake in West Glover, Vermont were especially cherished times for him and those closest to him. Having lived along both coasts—from California to Oregon and Vermont to Maine—he embraced each place with excitement and gratitude.

Richard is lovingly remembered by his life-long partner and husband Stanley Corklin, his first wife Patricia Melaik, his children Jeremy, Joshua, and Gabrielle Pugliese, his daughter-in-law Jennifer Schneller Pugliese and granddaughters Liliana, Emilia and Arianna Pugliese; as well as all who were touched by his wisdom and warmth throughout his life.

A memorial service and celebration of life honoring Rev. Richard Arthur Pugliese’s life will be held at a later date.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who walk paths of faith and service.
