Richard “Rick” Molloy passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, surrounded by family, after a lengthy battle with colon cancer which he faced with resilience, tenacity, and grace.
Born September 16, 1958, in Orange, New Jersey, to Dorothy Russell Molloy and James Molloy, Rick grew up in Livingston with his three brothers, forming deep friendships that became a cornerstone of his life. He cherished his family heritage, drawing inspiration from his grandfather, Basketball Hall of Fame member John “Honey” Russell, and his father James, a Korean War veteran who instilled in him values of dedication, courage, and humility. He also reflected his mother Dotty’s outgoing, friendly and kind personality with everyone he met.
After graduating from Montclair State University with a degree in English Literature, Rick devoted 38 years to United Rentals, where his integrity and kindness earned him the deep respect and affection of colleagues. During his illness, the outpouring of support from those colleagues touched him deeply.
Rugby was Rick’s lifelong passion, embodying everything he loved: competition, camaraderie, and connection. The friendships and adventures the sport brought him were among his most treasured.
Rick leaves behind his beloved partner of 19 years, Wendy Chivian, his steadfast companion through every joy and challenge. Together they built a vibrant life in New York City and Canaan, New York. He was an immensely proud father to sons Daniel Laurence (“Danny”) Molloy, who married Victoria Limongelli in November 2025, and Matthew James (“Matt”) Molloy, partner of Brittany Stellfox. His pride in the men they had become was boundless. He is also survived by devoted brothers Chris, Russ, and Ron.
Rick will be remembered for his infectious warmth, quick humor, unwavering loyalty, and genuine joy.
