Richard John Schleifer, a dedicated professional, talented artist, and man of "razor-sharp" wit, passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in New York City and raised in Washington, D.C., Richard led a life defined by intellectual curiosity, creative passion, and a deep devotion to his family.
Richard’s passion for the arts was evident from an early age. He studied at George Washington University and the Corcoran School of Art, later honing his craft at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the mentorship of Souverbie. Richard also spent a formative period of his youth serving in the US Army, an experience that preceded his years of study and travel in Europe.
Over the years, Richard followed several paths, including time in the advertising field. He spent many years at SNET in Connecticut, where he served as Sales Director until his retirement. Seeking a return to his creative roots, he later moved to New Mexico to focus fully on his painting and sculpture. His work continued to evolve throughout his life, shaped by both his formal training and the inspiration of contemporary masters. He eventually moved to Florida, where he spent his final years.
Throughout his life, Richard enjoyed staying active, especially golfing and skiing. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family, who will remember him for his creativity, his intellect, and his humor.
Richard’s life was enriched by the many loving years he shared with the late Yvonne Burk and with Jean Schleifer. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his children: Christine White, Joelle DeCarlo (Mark), and Susan Schleifer, as well as his dearly loved Adrienne Burk, Diane Burk (Rob), and (predeceased) Linden Burk (Jan). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Matthew White, Nicole White, Stephanie DeCarlo, Michael DeCarlo, Jessica Graves Gonzalez, Casy Graves, Tyler Langenbrunner, Jacy, and Kerry.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Margaret Hines and Jacob Schleifer, and his siblings, Dorothy Kimball and Bill Schleifer. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, whom he kept laughing with since they were old enough to get his jokes.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the near future at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the following organization: Parkinson's Foundation (https://www.parkinson.org/donate) Tribute Gift: https://www.parkinson.org/?form=19983&tribute=true
