Richard J. Smith, age 90, a lifelong resident of Quincy, died peacefully, Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born in Quincy, to the late Florence (Horsley) and Ernest A. Smith. He was the youngest of eight siblings: Frank, Ernest, John, Marion, Florence, Eleanor, and Doris. He attended Quincy High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree from Northeastern University.
Smitty was proud to have served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict receiving the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp and Good Conduct Medal. You would often hear him telling stories of driving a half track and camping out in the forests of Germany, as well as his time spent in Belgium and France.
His lifelong occupation was as a naval architect and marine engineer in the shipbuilding industry. He began his career as an apprentice at the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy. He went on to work for the former architectural firm J.J. Henry in Cohasset, General Dynamics in Connecticut and in Maine at Bath Iron Works. He was a longtime member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).
Beyond being a kind, fun loving man, Smitty was creative and enjoyed painting, using acrylics and oils to paint landscapes and nautical themed pieces. His best piece most known to family and friends as it hung in the family living room for years was a painting of waves crashing on the Minot's Ledge Lighthouse.
