Richard Drexler Wagar, a man of service, entrepreneurial drive, and legendary dry sense of humor passed away peacefully in his home in Punta Gorda, Florida from complications of Parkinson’s disease on March 16, 2026. He was 83 years old.
Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Richard remained a Pennsylvanian at heart throughout his life. He graduated from Manheim High School in 1960 and Penn State University in March of 1964. Richard later earned an MBA from Temple University.
His commitment to his country began as an ROTC graduate of Penn State, leading to service in the U.S. Navy aboard two destroyers, the USS Barney and the USS John Paul Jones. His connection to the water remained a lifelong theme, later serving as a volunteer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
In his professional career, Richard was an entrepreneur who specialized in the development and management of outpatient surgery centers.
Outside of the office, Richard’s impact was felt deeply in his community. As the long-time Scoutmaster for Troop 48 in Medford Lakes, New Jersey, he mentored many young men, including his sons, Jonathan and Jeffrey. It was during these years that he developed a deep love for adventuring with his sons through the Pine Barrens. He was a pillar of his local church and the kind of neighbor who was always the first to offer a helping hand.
Richard knew how to enjoy the finer, simpler things in life. He was a lifelong, long-suffering, and often-cheering fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. When he wasn't watching the ballgame, he could often be found on the tennis courts, at the gym, or at the racetrack enjoying the thrill of car racing. In his later years, he found a new passion for exploring the landscapes of the desert Southwest.
He was famously armed with a supply of "dad jokes" and was rarely seen at the end of a long day without a glass of Cutty Sark whisky in hand. His humor and warmth made him a favorite in every circle he moved through.
The son of the late Karl and Zelda Wagar of Lancaster, PA, Richard is survived by his wife, Linda Wagar; his sisters, Marilyn Chronister (Robert) and Susan Bucher (Jack), both of Lititz, PA; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his step-daughter, Clair O’Hara; his sons, Jonathan (Jennifer) and Jeffrey (Whitney) Wagar; and his two cherished granddaughters, Ada Rose and Samantha.
He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, a love for his family, and a reminder to never take life too seriously to tell a bad joke.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 23, 2026 at 10:00am at First Presbyterian Church, Punta Gorda, Florida.
