Rita Klunder (nee Makowski) of East Elmhurst, New York, passed away peacefully at home. She was 98 years old. Rita was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Klunder, her childhood sweetheart. She was the sister to the late Stanley Makowski and Stephen Makowski Jr. She is survived by her devoted daughters Janice Skiba and Virginia (Ginny) Klunder (Allan Braslow), and her loving sons John Klunder, Jr. (Carol) and Gary Klunder (Kathie). She was the cherished grandmother of Stephanie Fitzpatrick (Timothy), and of Jennifer Amores (Jowell) and Kellie Klunder; the proud great-grandmother ("Granny Granny") of Logan and Carter Fitzpatrick, and of Madeleine and Makena Amores; and the adored aunt of Joan and the late Tom Mullin.

Born in December 1926 in the Wakefield section of the Bronx, Rita grew up during the Great Depression and married John in September 1946 following his service in World War II. She began her career as a telephone operator with New York Telephone during the war and, after raising her four children, returned to work—eventually becoming Chief Switchboard Operator at Ernst & Young, where she remained until her retirement.

In retirement, Rita enjoyed traveling and taking part in many senior activities. Her favorite way to travel was by cruise ship, and she delighted in voyages to the Caribbean and even to Alaska. She had a lifelong love of reading—from the days of paperbacks tucked into her bag for subway rides to and from work to the audiobooks she treasured later in life when her eyesight declined. She also had a fondness for games of chance, including bingo, poker, and blackjack, and delighted in teaching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren how to play them, along with family favorites like gin rummy and backgammon.

Rita often said that her greatest joy was her family, who brought her endless pride and happiness. Even when her eyes no longer worked as they once did, they still lit up every time she saw her great-grandchildren. She took the greatest pride and joy in being the most incredible Granny Granny — cheering their milestones, reminiscing about the good 'ol' days, encouraging their dreams for the future, and showering them with unconditional love. She loved gathering for holidays and special occasions with family and friends, always cherishing the laughter, stories, and good food shared around the table. Whether enjoying a favorite restaurant meal or spending time with her family, Rita treasured every moment spent with those she loved most.

In accordance with her wishes, Rita's remains were cremated. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In memory of Rita, donations may be made to the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (Library of Congress) or the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED).
