Robert Michael Avakian

Robert Michael AVAKIAN of Hackensack, New Jersey passed away March 24,2026 at Valley Hospital. Coach Bob, as he was known by his players and students alike, taught English at the Cavallini School in Upper Saddle River,NJ in the 1970s. For 30 years he operated his own house painting business that earned rave reviews from his Bergen County customers who appreciated his meticulousness.
Bob's love of basketball shone through brightly in his decades on the sidelines leading the Armenian Presbyterian Church (APC) teams to championships. His lifelong impact on his players was his greatest source of pride.
He is survived by his brother Dr.Gary AVAKIAN (Arlene), nephews Andrew AVAKIAN and David AVAKIAN (Lindsey), great nephew Caleb AVAKIAN and great nieces Jocelyn and Arielle AVAKIAN.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at APC in Paramus,NJ on April 11 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, if desired, contributions can be made to Armenian Presbyterian Church of Paramus,NJ or the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
