Robert "Bob" Sumpter, a longtime resident of Tuolumne County, passed away peacefully at his home in Sonora on April 5, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 76 years old.

Born and raised in Chico, California, Bob served honorably in the United States Army Air Force from 1945 to 1948. Following his military service, he embarked on an adventurous chapter in Alaska, where he worked as a bush pilot and commercial fisherman. Flying was his lifelong passion, and he often spoke of how deeply he missed it in later years.

In 1963, Bob relocated to Manteca, California, where he pursued a successful career as a millwright until his retirement in 1984. Upon retiring, he moved to Tuolumne County and fulfilled a dream by opening Jamestown Gold Nugget Jewelry, channeling his talent as a skilled jewelry designer. A skill he taught to two of his daughters.

Bob was involved in his community, having served as Past Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in Manteca and as a dedicated member of Northern California Millwrights Union Local No. 102.

An avid golfer, creative jewelry designer, and enthusiastic traveler, Bob enjoyed all his adventures and had many great stories as a result. Family was often entertained by his stories over a glass of scotch on the rocks with a splash of water.

Above all, Bob was a devoted father whose old-fashioned values, boundless love of adventure, and wonderful sense of humor touched everyone around him. Patient (but not too patient), kind, and selfless, he always placed his kids first, making personal sacrifices for the children he loved so dearly. He was a loyal friend to many and beloved by all who knew him.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Shari Sumpter, Jeanie Larson, Susan Sumpter, and Robyne Teslich (and her husband Nick); five grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Lee Sumpter; his siblings; and his parents.

Bob's spirit of adventure, humor, practical advise, and love will be forever missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
