Robert Owen "Papa Bob" Butcher, age 92, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026.

Bob was born on October 1, 1933, in Oakland, California, to Fay and Evelyn Butcher. He spent his early childhood in Southern California before his family relocated to Grants Pass, Oregon. There, he completed his education and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1951 and then Oregon State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Math and Science. Following college, Bob served his country with honor in the United States Army for two years. After his military service, he briefly returned to Southern California before settling in San Jose, California, where he built a remarkable 31-year career working in defense for Lockheed Missiles and Space in Sunnyvale, CA.

Known lovingly as Papa Bob, he lived a life defined by curiosity, discipline, adventure and independence. A testament to his determination and love of the outdoors, Bob hiked the entire Appalachian Trail at the age of 67, completing the journey in six months straight. He also spent weekends for 20 years building his A-Frame home at Carnelian Bay, CA - Lake Tahoe where he retired in 1991. He found joy in downhill skiing, cutting wood during the summers, solving puzzles, listening to classical music, traveling, being a private pilot flight instructor and—most of all-spending time with his family. He was a devoted presence at his grandchildren's school events and every single milestone.

Bob was an amazingly devoted father to his daughter, Nancy (Dave) Olson, and an incredible grandfather to Andrew Olson and Jessica (Lawrence) Reese. He was also a proud great-grandfather to his two great-granddaughters. His family truly brought him immense joy.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his family finds comfort in knowing that he is already off on his next great adventure.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
