Robert Dalton Cates (Bob), age 88, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2021 and defied the odds living another 4 years.
He was born on March 1, 1937, in Memphis, TN, and spent his life devoted to family, hard work, and faith. He will be remembered for his kindness, his quiet strength, and the unwavering love he had for family and friends.
Bob was a veteran of the United States Air Force and worked for the State of California Parks Department for more than 30 years.
Rita, his beloved wife of 34 years, preceded him in death in 1995. Her sudden passing was one of the deepest heartbreaks of his life, yet he carried her memory with tenderness and strength. Years later, he was blessed to find companionship with Monica, with whom he built a warm and loving marriage. Their 18 beautiful years together brought him much comfort and joy.
He is survived by his sons, John (Cindy) and Greg (Stephanie), his wife Monica and her son, Michael (Kimberlee) and daughter, Michele (Ron), his sisters Mary Sue and Brenda, 9 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his guidance, his patience, and his belief in them. He was a loving and caring husband, grandfather, brother, and uncle and a loyal friend to many.
A service honoring his life will be held on December 20, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Carmichael, CA. A reception will immediately follow in the Tralee Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to
Wounded Warriors in his memory. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Vitas Hospice and to his caregiver, Pio, for the compassion shown during his final days.
