Robert Laird Esson (Bob), more affectionally known as "Bofa" by his loving grandchildren, passed away on November 6, 2025 after a five-year courageous battle with stage 4 kidney cancer. Bob was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 16, 1944 to James Douglas Esson and Patsy Esson, and was the younger brother of Douglas Esson, who was not only a brother but a best friend for his entire life. Bob was raised in Sherman, Texas until he was 13, and then moved to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Southern Methodist University, and upon graduation, started his career in manufacturing and supply chain management.
Bob married Wynell Jones Esson on December 23, 1967 in Whitesboro, Texas, and welcomed their two sons, Robert Christopher Esson (56) and Brad Develin Esson (54) shortly thereafter. Bob's work career started in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, when he went to work with Quaker Oats. This job took him across the country and to Venezuela, as he moved up the ranks. He and Wynell ultimately settled down in Dallas in 1993, where he dove headlong into his passion for golf. Bob loved to travel (especially if it included golf!), reading, playing cards, drinking Diet Coke and socializing with friends. While his cancer ultimately prevented him from playing golf any longer, he continued to play poker on a weekly basis until nearly the time of his passing.
Bofa had the benefit of all four grandchildren (Riley (20), Andersen (19), Vienna (16) and Talula (12)) living in Texas and they enjoyed many excursions together. Bob was extremely loyal to his family and friends and maintained close friendships with multiple people that extended for decades. Additionally, strangers to Bob, were simply people he hadn't met yet, as he had a knack for "making buddies" everywhere he went.
Bob's internal toughness manifested itself throughout his battle with kidney cancer, as he never complained about pain or the cancer. Bob threw himself into the experimental treatments that likely extended his life in a significant way.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Wynell, sons Christopher Esson (Kim) and Brad Esson (Tami), as well as his grandchildren and brother. A Celebration of Life will be held on December 13, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Communion, 17405 Muirfield Dr., Dallas Texas, where Bob was a longtime member and usher. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VNA Hospice, 1420 W. Mockingbird Lane, Suite 700, Dallas, TX 75247. While we will all miss "Bofa", he is in a much better place and no longer suffering.
