Robert James Scally

1937 - 2026

Robert James Scally, 88, of Sag Harbor, New York, died on January 7, 2026 surrounded by family. Bob was born in August 1937 in Queens, New York, the son of Irish immigrants, and grew up in a cold-water flat. His early experiences stayed with him throughout his life, shaping a lasting respect for the lives and labor of ordinary people.
In the 1950s, Bob played trumpet in jazz ensembles around New York City, immersing himself in the city's vibrant jazz scene, and performed and occasionally recorded with jazz legends as a studio musician.
Bob met his beloved wife, Dena Wolfe, while completing his bachelor's degree at Queens College. He went on to earn his doctorate from Princeton University and built a decades-long academic career at New York University, where he was a professor of modern European history.
A committed microhistorian, Bob believed history was best understood through the lives of everyday people rather than through those with power. That conviction shaped his book The End of Hidden Ireland, an archival study of Irish peasant families during the Great Famine and the ways their individual lives and decisions shaped Ireland.
His defining professional achievement was serving as the founding director of Glucksman Ireland House at NYU, which he helped launch at a moment when Ireland was emerging onto the global stage. Under his leadership, Ireland House became a vibrant center for scholarship, dialogue, and cultural exchange. Above all, it was his love of teaching that brought him the most professional and personal satisfaction.
In retirement, Bob and Dena settled in Sag Harbor, New York, where he read voraciously and enjoyed daily walks on the beaches of Long Island Sound.
Bob is survived by his wife, Dena; his son, Terence, daughter-in-law Joelle; his grandsons, Theodore and Dominic; his brother-in-law, Daniel Toscani; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Patrick; his mother, Anne Regan; his brother, Jack; and his sisters, Eileen Young and Nancy Toscani.
Bob loved lively conversation, especially about history and politics, and he never hesitated to provoke discussion. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his deep dedication to the underdog, both in society and in sports.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) or Doctors Without Borders, organizations whose work reflects values he cared deeply about.
