Robert Walker Tarran, born May 25, 1944, in Provo, Utah, passed away peacefully on
Wednesday, February 4, 2025, at his home in Spencer, ID.
He was born of parents Herbert Walker Tarran and Mary Pauline Walker. He was preceded in death by two siblings: brother, Frederick "Fred" Tarran and sister, Sandra "Sandy" King McClure.
Robert grew up in Provo, Utah. He attended Dixon Junior High where he was student body
president. Robert loved athletics. At Provo High school he was co-captain of the football team, and later played for BYU where he earned his BS degree. His sports enthusiasm later shifted to golf, where he played and rated courses throughout Utah. Robert joined and served in the National Guard right out of high school with his good friends and had many great adventures and memories.
Robert's professional career took him to diverse companies and places including Boeing in
Seattle and IBM in Colorado and Utah. Robert was also the top salesman at the Porsche
dealership and won a trip to Germany the year that Porsche won the Le Man's race. As an entrepreneur he started three different companies. The best known of these was TelAmerica, a long-distance telecommunications company, where he served as General Manager. He retired at age 55.
From 1966 to 1990 Robert was married to Barbara Mills and was blessed with three children: Bret, Brad and Brooke Tarran. He later reconnected with the love of his life, Barbara Schenck Berg, whom he met but never dated in high school. They married in 1991, blending his children with Barbara's two sons: Wyman and Josh Berg into a large, loving family.
Barbara and Robert enjoyed traveling the world together, spending summers in Spencer, ID with family, and splitting time between their homes in La Paz, Mexico and Salt Lake City, Utah. They had 34 years together; Barbara passed on July 14, 2025.
Robert was known for his kindness and willingness to help tackle any project. His enthusiasm to help get a project finished often meant doing it without reading instructions, or "Coyote style" as he called it. This could result in the need to do it again (sometimes several times) before getting it right, but to Robert that simply prolonged the joy of it. He inherited an artistic and creative nature from his mother, Mary, and made wonderful paintings, drawings and woodwork. Robert won the grand prize from the County Fair for his artistic rendition of a "Spear Thrower" (made from coat hangers and burlap). Robert loved the outdoors, fly-fishing and exploring the wild areas around his Idaho home via ATV.
Robert is survived by his children: Bret (David) Laino; Wyman (Rene) Berg; Brad Tarran; Josh Berg; and Brooke Tarran; two grandchildren: Alex and Hallie Berg; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
To respect Robert's wishes, immediate family will dedicate his grave later this summer in
Spencer, ID. However, If you are ever heading towards Spencer, ID, Robert invites you to visit him in the Spencer Cemetery. He will be located under the large Spencer rock by the pine tree, on the south-side of cemetery.
