Robert "Bob" Thompson, 83, lost his battle with cancer and passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 8, 2026, days after celebrating his birthday with family at his home in Alamo.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; brother, Fred; three children, Bill, Beth, and Joe; six grandchildren, Aika, Yumemi, Hunter, Hayes, Rebekah, and Bobby; and several close friends and additional family. He is further survived by a backyard garden that brought joy and good food to all.

Winner of a "First Baby Boy of the New Year" award, Bob was born Jan. 1, 1943, to Vivian Boston and Robert Thompson in Atlanta, Georgia. There were several lively stories of Boy Scout alligator mascots and "swimming with the gators" shared about growing up in the South. He loved to cook; making sure his children knew about okra, cornbread, and the proper way to bake an apple pie.

Raised by a schoolteacher mom and engineer dad, Bob developed a life-long love of reading and graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech.

He entered the Navy after college and served as a nuclear officer during the Vietnam War. His military time happened alongside his brother Fred's service in the Marine Corps. They were not only brothers but also brothers in arms. Even though Bob remained modest about his service, two wooden emblems of the Navy and Marine Corps are proudly displayed in the family room of his home.

It was while he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) that he met a Bay Area native on a blind date and fell in love. The two were married soon after at a ceremony in Sausalito.

Bob was a quiet, hardworking man. He worked as a project manager at a few power companies, including Pacific Gas and Electric. In addition, he was a consultant becoming a project manager at Embarcadero Systems Corp. His work was fulfilling, and free time was devoted to being with the family he cherished.

He loved travel, history, and was passionate about uncovering information about his descendants through genealogy. He hoped that his work gathering family history stories would help keep those memories alive for future generations. Bob will be missed and kindly remembered by all who knew him.
