Robert "Bob" L. Wesley, 88, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. A pioneering architect, devoted family man, and steadfast advocate for equity and excellence in design, he leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Born on November 27, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, Bob's passion for architecture was ignited at the age of twelve after attending the unveiling of a new building designed by McKissack & McKissack—the same firm where he would later work during his college summers. This early experience set him on a path of purpose and perseverance that would define his life.

Bob pursued his education with unwavering determination, earning a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Tennessee State University before continuing to the University of Oklahoma, where he received both a Bachelor and Master of Architecture. These academic achievements laid the groundwork for an extraordinary career that would reshape skylines and open doors for future generations.

In 1964, Bob joined the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), one of the world's leading architecture firms. Two decades later, in 1984, he made history as SOM's first Black partner—a milestone that marked not only personal triumph but also a significant advancement in the profession. Over nearly forty years with the firm, Bob played an instrumental role in designing and delivering major civic and cultural landmarks across the United States and abroad.

His architectural contributions include iconic projects such as the Sears Tower and John Hancock Center in Chicago; the Art Institute of Chicago; Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall; Millennium Park; and renovations along State Street. His work also extended to institutions like Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. Beyond Chicago, his influence reached cities including Austin, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis—and internationally to Algeria, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

Bob's commitment to service was as profound as his professional accomplishments. He lent his expertise to numerous organizations including the American Institute of Architects (Chicago Chapter), the Boy Scouts of America, the Private Sector Resource Council, and as a founding board member of the Newhouse Architecture Foundation. Through these efforts, he championed mentorship and inclusion within architecture and beyond.

In recognition of his groundbreaking career and dedication to uplifting others, the Robert L. Wesley Award was established in 2020 by the SOM Foundation. Named in his honor as SOMs first Black partner, this annual award supports BIPOC undergraduate students pursuing degrees in architecture-related fields across the United States. Providing both financial assistance and mentorship opportunities, it stands as a living tribute to Robert's enduring belief in nurturing talent and expanding access.

Bob was a man of deep intellect and boundless creativity—qualities reflected not only in his architectural work but also in his personal passions. He found joy in photography, reading, classical music, cinema, and fine arts. A devout Catholic throughout his life, he drew strength from faith and family alike.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Tracy Wesley Kocourek and Tammy Wesley Robertson; granddaughters Jaizelle Liat Rome and Skylar Alexis Kocourek; and sister Irma Brookins. He now joins his beloved wife Wilma L. Wesley; parents John and Freddie Wesley; sister Helen Deberry; and brother John Ed Wesley in eternal rest.

Bob was loving, generous, ambitious, thoughtful, resilient, and intellectual with an indomitable spirit who turned wounds into wisdom and struggles into a legacy of love. A visionary storyteller whose influence transcended generations and borders alike, he was cherished by all who knew him—as husband, father, grandfather, sibling, friend, colleague, and will be deeply missed.

In honor of our father's enduring legacy and commitment to future architects and designers, we kindly request donations be made to his foundation in lieu of flowers: https://somfoundation.com/support/

May Robert L. Wesley's memory continue to inspire all who strive to build a better world through vision, courage, and compassion.
