Robin Jefferson Garrett died on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, eight months after being diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer.

Robin was, in his own words, a "Jack of Many Trades." He approached life with boundless curiosity — at once a dreamer and philosopher, scientist and engineer, athlete, father, writer, musician, and citizen of the world. Rooted in Humanist principles, he believed deeply in reason, compassion, and the pursuit of knowledge as pathways to a meaningful life. Robin's humanism first found a home at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin and later at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, where he served on the Board of Trustees.

Robin's passion for learning shaped every chapter of his life. Even in high school, he challenged conventional thinking and sought deeper understanding. His academic journey led him to earn both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Physics from Texas State University. But his education never truly ended — he remained a lifelong learner, continually exploring the intersections of science, ethics, and human experience.

At first glance, Robin exhibited a paradoxical nature. He reveled in spirited debate and had a penchant for ridiculous jokes. He penned philosophical musings yet often communicated using memes and emojis. He was an avid cyclist who could also sit at his computer for hours. What those closest to him experienced, however, was a depth and warmth that defined him — intellectually rigorous, emotionally present, and deeply devoted to the people he loved.

Family and friends were an anchor for Robin. While his career as an engineer in the semiconductor industry necessitated several moves over the years, relocation never diminished his commitment to those he loved. He maintained close ties to friends in Texas and Arizona while building new friendships in Minnesota. Robin moved to Minnesota in 2020, drawn by both the "green" and the "blue" of the area. He was thrilled when Robert and Connor chose to follow. In the years that followed, he lived first with Robert, then with Connor and Orion, and eventually split his time between his home with Connor and Orion and his home with Heather and her children.

He is survived by his sons, Connor Garrett and Robert Garrett (Amelia); his grandson, Orion Garrett; his beloved partner, Heather Besonen, and her children, Rosalie and Arrolyn; his former spouse and the mother of his sons, Jennifer Clark; and his brother, Dave Wimp.

Robin, we will miss you immensely.

At the family's request, there will be no service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be planned for the fall. Those wishing to honor Robin's memory may make contributions to the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis.
