Roger Kenneth Applegate passed away on November 8, 2025, in Naples, Florida at the age of 82. He was born on October 16, 1943, in Newark, New Jersey, to Edna Hester Steel and Clarence Andrew Applegate.
In the mid-1960s, Roger relocated to Houston, Texas, where he began a lifelong career as a hairdresser. His passion for the salon industry spanned more than five decades. Through his work, he met Leanna Harris; they married on August 19, 1975. Together, they built both a family and a business legacy. Their daughter, Rachel Garner Applegate, was born on October 20, 1976.
Roger and Leanna were entrepreneurial partners as well as life partners. They owned and operated several businesses over the years including Applegate Salon, Applegate Too—a clothing boutique—and Applegate Salon on the Bayou. Roger retired in December of 2021 after more than 50 years of dedicated service to his clients and community.
He was also passionate about music and the arts and shared that connection with all those that he knew. He spent many years singing in the Grace Presbyterian Church choir and regularly attended professional theatre performances and concerts. A supportive father, he was often seen at his daughter's theatrical performances at HITS and The Kinkaid School and later where she worked on Broadway and in regional theatres.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Leanna Harris Applegate; his parents Edna and Clarence; and his sister Joyce Walker. He is survived by his brother Harvey Applegate and daughter Rachel Applegate.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to an arts organization of your choosing in Roger's memory.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
