“Stick Coleman.” “Roger Dodger.” “The Silver Fox.” After 94 years as the life of the party, Roger S. Coleman passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025. He was generous and loyal, funny and outspoken. A true charmer. Roger’s great storytelling, sense of humor, and deep tan will be missed by all who were enchanted by his warm personality.
Roger was born on August 25, 1931 to Jules and Rush Coleman. He grew up in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, along with his wirehaired terrier Kip, and then his dalmatian Duke. Roger excelled at sports, especially basketball, at Erasmus Hall High School, Adelphi Academy, and his beloved Camp Lenox. The friendships he made in those early days would last throughout his lifetime.
After attending Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, Roger enlisted in the US Army to join its effort in the Korean War. While en route overseas, the peace treaty was signed to end the conflict. Roger would explain, “It’s because they knew I was coming.”
After two years of service in Korea, Roger returned to New York City, where he began a 35-year career he loved as a broker working on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. In 1960 he met Sydnie Mischel at a cocktail party, and they married in March 1961. With a growing family, the couple moved to Westchester County to raise their daughter Toni and sons Jon and Eric. Roger was an ever-present father and devoted his time to coaching Little League, leading camping trips, and ringleading family vacations. His kids enjoyed an idyllic childhood and credit him for the wonderful impact he had on their lives.
In his next chapter, Roger met and later married Barbara Kurshan, and for the next 33 years they enjoyed a life in their beautiful apartment in New York City, summers in the Berkshires, winters in Florida, and frequent European getaways. As his kids and Barbara’s kids Liz and Peter had children of their own, Roger became the delighted “Grandpa Rogie” to 10 grandchildren.
Long Boat Key and the Amalfi Coast. Mallomars and jellybeans. Poker and pool. Classic movies and Chinese food. Stories and laughter and brightly colored shirts and epic sunbathing sessions. And always family first.
A life well-lived by a man well-loved.
