Roger Shelton Spang

1933 - 2026

Roger S. Spang, M.D. passed away on February 6, 2026 at the age of 92 in Goleta, California of natural causes. He was surrounded by family and the loving staff at Country Gardens during the time of his passing.

Roger was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on March 30, 1933 to Luther F. Spang and Florence (Shelton) Spang. He was the youngest of his four siblings. After finishing high school, he attended Albright College in Reading, PA. Roger attended medical school at Temple University and subsequently completed his training in Internal Medicine at Reading Hospital and Cardiology at Graduate Hospital. It was at Graduate where he met his future wife Marie (Staskiel) Spang. After completing his training, he proceeded to South Korea to serve in the Army for a year and then returned to Valley Forge Hospital (Pennsylvania) for his second year of service. Roger and Marie subsequently married in 1967 and enjoyed over 58 years of marriage together.

After marriage, they headed to San Francisco, California where he established an Internal Medicine practice. He practiced at French, St. Mary’s, and California-Pacific Medical Centers. Both he and Marie started a family and resided in Millbrae, California. Not long after retirement, they moved to The Villages in San Jose, California. There, they were active in the community and belonged to many clubs. Roger also managed a blood pressure clinic in the community. There were many great trips and outings over those years. As time passed, they moved to Santa Barbara to be closer to their son.

Over the years, Roger had many outside interests. He was a lifelong pianist and made an effort to play the piano every day. His passion for and knowledge of antiques was extensive and was a member of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle. Other favorite activities were walks along the Crystal Springs Trail and hikes along the trails behind where they lived in San Jose.

Roger is survived by his wife Marie and two children: Jennifer (Spang) Cambi of Farmington, CT and Howard Douglas Spang, M.D. of Santa Barbara, California. Also surviving him are his four grandchildren: grandson, Warren Spang and granddaughters, Erin Spang and Riley and Ashley Cambi. He was preceded in death by his parents and remaining siblings.

A Celebration of Life is to follow at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Smart Cremation.
