It is with great sorrow that the Lieberman family announces the passing of Ronald Harris Lieberman. He died on Dec. 22 at the age of 83, surrounded by loved ones including his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren.

Ronald (Ron) was born on June 28, 1942, in Philadelphia to David and Pearl (Kratchman) Lieberman. He was born into a family with brothers Alan, Herbert, and Nathan, and sister Diana Udell Dennis.

Ron’s one-of-a-kind sense of humor was –without question– the most defining feature of a man whose presence lit up every room he entered. Whether he was known as the bagel guy, Mr. L, Hub, Dad, or Pop Pop, Ron was a beloved leader, entrepreneur, and patriarch.

Ron was raised in Elkins Park, PA. A graduate of Cheltenham High School and Temple University, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves while working in the children’s clothing industry.

He eventually took a position as a sales rep for Trim Fit where he met Kathy (Simon) Lieberman –who would become his wife of 56 years.

After marrying Kathy, Ron moved to Northeastern PA and partnered with his father-in-law, Abram Simon, to grow Simon’s Auto Parts in Mocanaqua, PA.

More than his wife, Kathy was also his business partner. Together, and with the help of their children, they launched Basically Bagels, a successful bagel bakery and restaurant. Ron’s vision was to bring the authentic taste of New York bagels to Northeastern PA.

Ron’s greatest joy was raising his family on Highland Drive in Dallas, PA. In addition to his wife, Kathy, he is survived by his children: Jill of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; David and Darlene, of Mountain Top, PA; and Steven and Ann-Marie Lieberman of Naperville, IL. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Brooke and Ethan Lieberman (24 & 22); Priya, Axl and Declan Marcus (19, 16 & 14); and Dylan and Aria Lieberman (13 & 10).

May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held in the coming months in Pennsylvania. Details will follow as family and friends are notified and plans are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, Ron would have appreciated contributions to the World Wildlife Foundation in his memory.
