Ronna "Niki" Drumm Carlton, 81, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, surrounded by her family, who loved her deeply and are grateful for the compassionate care she received in her final weeks.
Born on April 13, 1944, in Waterbury, Connecticut, she attended Waterbury schools, graduating from Crosby High School in 1962. She carried with her treasured memories of childhood friendships and family bonds in Waterbury that shaped her independent spirit. From an early age, she possessed a sharp mind, a strong will, and curiosity about the world that would define her life.
Niki built an extraordinary career marked by intelligence, determination, and remarkable business acumen. As a specialist in global software systems, her travels for work led to many locations around the world, teaching domestic and international banking systems. Destinations included Toronto, London, Singapore, Siberia, Australia, and more. She was a true pioneer in her field, earning respect not only for her knowledge but for her strength and presence.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she generously gave her time and heart. She volunteered with hospice, offering comfort and a steady presence to those navigating life's final chapter. Those who knew her will remember her most for her humor. She had a quick wit, a playful edge, and an ability to find laughter even in difficult moments. Her stories, often infused with worldly adventure and sharp observation, kept everyone entertained. Her laughter was unmistakable and unforgettable.
In her final months, she faced health challenges with the same resilience and independence that characterized her life. Even then, her spirit remained strong.
She is survived by her niece, Jennifer DeWitt; her nephew, Jeffrey DeWitt, and his wife, Kim, and their daughter, Michelle Oman, and her husband, TJ. In addition, by stepdaughters, Deborah Thomas and her son, John Thomas, and daughter Lindsey Hagerman, and her husband Alec; Carla Carlton, Lezlie Laseter, and her husband Chuck, and their daughter Emmy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel John Carlton, USMC, parents, and other beloved family members.
To honor her love of animals, memorial donations are encouraged to a local chapter of the ASPCA in Ronna/Niki's name.
Her laughter echoes in our hearts, and her strength lives on in all who loved her. May she rest in peace, her adventurous spirit forever free.
